FARLEY SAINT-LOUIS
In order to raise funds for fraternity events, the Brothers of Beta Lambda sold several types of flower bouquets during the NOVA Southeastern University's graduation events. Furthermore, a portion of the funds raised was contributed to St. Jude's Hospital as a donation. Every February, Brothers participate in and collaborate with the Broward County Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization to organize the "3-2-1 Dance for Down Syndrome" event. During the event, Brothers partake in a variety of activities including being a dance motivator, bar-tending (non-alcoholic beverages only), greeting guests, and handing out red carnations, shirts, and other goodies. Every November, Brothers and pledges from Beta Lambda and Beta Phi (Palm Beach Atlantic University) get together for the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer event which is one of the main philanthropy events both Phi Delta Chi Chapters participate in every year. Nova Southeastern University hosts "A Day for Children" every September and is an all day event that is open to the public. Brothers and pledges work together to come up with a theme for the booth which was "Proper Hand Washing" in the past year, purchasing supplies including goody bags to be handed to the children, and preparing a poster board display. Other activities include showing the children as well as adults the proper way of hand washing. The Phi Delta Chi (PDC) Beta Lambda Chapter at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy organized and participated in the Zo’s Family Health and Wellness at the Miramar Regional Park on January 16th. Beta Lambda supported the organization by providing Blood Glucose Screening to over 70 community attendees. Participants also received diabetes awareness educational pamphlets, handouts on how to eat healthy, and exercise for better health. Students had an opportunity to interact with participants and counseling was offered by the NSU faculty member, Devada Singh-Franco R.Ph., Pharm.D., CDE, upon request. This was the first time Beta Lambda participated in the Zo’s Family Health and Wellness, hosted by the Zo’s Mourning Family Foundation, and was thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of this great event while making a positive impact in the community. We showed so much passion and enthusiasm that Alonzo Mourning himself stopped by at the PDC Beta Lambda booth to appreciate our services to the community. The Blood Glucose Screening was organized by Sanna Siddiqui, PDC Beta Lambda Community Service Chair. CommunityFest is an annual festival that occurs every February to bring the NSU community together and help build school spirit. Brothers of the Beta Lambda Chapter come up with a theme for the booth, purchase supplies, prepare little goody bags to hand out, work on a poster board display, and help in the setup and breakdown of the booth. Brothers of the Beta Lambda Chapter volunteer at the Fort Lauderdale Ronald McDonald House in December to prepare lunch to families who live there along with the children who are undergoing medical procedures at a nearby hospital. Brothers also have the opportunity of meeting with the families and serving them the food that have been prepared as well as providing stockings for the children to decorate in time for the holidays. Brothers have also volunteered to cook a meal at the Ronald McDonald House for a film crew in July 2015. Several Brothers of the Beta Lambda Chapter participated in a medication therapy management (MTM) and bone density health screening that took place at Clewiston, Florida at the Hendry Regional Medical Center. During the health screening, Brothers and other students of Nova Southeastern University were split into groups. There were 2 groups who were in charge of meeting with participants for medication therapy management and another 2 groups who were in charge of performing a bone density screening to the participants. Several NSU faculty were present in order to help and guide the students on what to say and/or do during the event. |
